You Are Magic is an upbeat collection of songs designed to open a spiritual dialogue for young children and families. What are the values we choose to live by, and how do we express them? Who are we, and why are we here? How do we connect with others? Where does creativity come from? How do we connect to the natural world? What can we do to make the world a better place?
This album is a concept album. The over-arching theme is that our own creative energy and momentum, which comes to us (especially children) naturally, is reflective of the creative energy and momentum of the universe. Everything we do reflects how we are a part of something bigger, and the more we are authentic in our self-expression, the more we reflect the true nature of who we are and why we are here. I really felt like kids and families needed to know this - that creativity, awareness, connectedness, and empathy are the sources of becoming and growing into who you really can be in the world. I envision the album as a tree, starting with the Roots & Branches, and reaching all the way through the Leaves & Sky.

about
I wrote this song on a trip Big Sur, sitting by the river with my guitar, looking up at the trees at dusk. Feeling protected by them, and knowing there is so much life in between the leaves and branches. It’s reassuring to remember that nature continues on its own timeline, its own path, and it feels good to be in harmony with that rhythm, if only for a few brief moments of peace and awareness. I also had a great time making the harmonies for this song, I was trying to sound like Crosby, Stills & Nash!
lyrics
Canopy
Staring up into the canopy
the leaves and branches crossing over me
sky peering through the bits of green
what does it all mean?
Feeling safe under the canopy
the strong trees are protecting me
reaching across all space and time
I am theirs and they are mine
(chorus) Everything’s alive in the canopy
The leaves are glowing in the sun’s yellow light
making shapes and shadows and intricate designs
an artist at work in color and line
so fine, so fine
Bright stars peeking through the canopy
the leaves disappear into the night
a chill in the air, the canopy’s still there
a beautiful morning surprise waiting for me
