You Are Magic is an upbeat collection of songs designed to open a spiritual dialogue for young children and families. What are the values we choose to live by, and how do we express them? Who are we, and why are we here? How do we connect with others? Where does creativity come from? How do we connect to the natural world? What can we do to make the world a better place?
This album is a concept album. The over-arching theme is that our own creative energy and momentum, which comes to us (especially children) naturally, is reflective of the creative energy and momentum of the universe. Everything we do reflects how we are a part of something bigger, and the more we are authentic in our self-expression, the more we reflect the true nature of who we are and why we are here. I really felt like kids and families needed to know this - that creativity, awareness, connectedness, and empathy are the sources of becoming and growing into who you really can be in the world. I envision the album as a tree, starting with the Roots & Branches, and reaching all the way through the Leaves & Sky.

about
It is our responsibility to continue the work of putting the world together, fixing what may be wrong, and repairing what is broken in it. This song uses a metaphor of a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle of the planet Earth to symbolize the seemingly overwhelming task of repairing the world in a fair and healthy way, and acknowledging that it is a huge task. As the child in the song realizes, we just have to work methodically, find how things connect, how their shapes work together, and take it one piece at a time. (Interestingly, I used the idea of a snow day as a way to be stuck in the house, not knowing that the COVID pandemic would soon keep us indoors for a really long time.)
lyrics
Putting It Back Together
It’s been snowing for two straight days
No one’s going anywhere
We’re all bored out of our gourds
And getting in each other’s hair
I’ve read every single book
In our home library
My mom says “Do a puzzle!”
I say “No way, that seems so scary!”
I pull it from the closet
The box it has some girth
It’s a thousand piece puzzle
Of the planet Earth
(chorus)
Where do I start
To put it back together
The pieces all fit in a particular way
However I start, I’ll finish it whenever
The Earth is complete, then I can call it a day
I start to sort the edges out
And build a strong foundation
It comes together naturally
But then everything gets so wiggly
The land masses are mostly green
But the oceans are so blue
And there’s so much in between
But soon I see a different picture emerge
It’s a thousand piece puzzle
Of the planet Earth
Where do I start
To put it back together
The pieces all fit in a particular way
However I start, I’ll finish it whenever
The Earth is complete, then I can call it a day
